"Good support from Dementia Pathway- Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust"

About: Coventry And Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust / Older people's mental health

(as a parent/guardian),

I am in my 70's and until my husband became very poorly in May I looked after him for 5 years with dementia and unfortunately he passed away in July.

I must admit being a carer is a 24 hour job but until his last few months of life I must say we were very lucky. We did always seem to get good support from the Alzheimers cafe which is run by Gary and also the Phoenix group which I am still able to go to each week.

I am hoping now that I can be of some help to other carers because in my honest opinion unless you have a loved one with this awful illness no one knows what it is like. I just wish I had him still to look after.

Dear Emerald861,

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to share your experiences as a Carer of 5 years to your husband, and in highlighting the support you received from the Alzheimers Cafe and the Phoenix Group. I am quite sure that your story resonates with many others who find themselves in a similiar situation, in caring for a loved one with Dementia. Like most chronic diseases, Dementia requires the input of carers and family 24 hours a day and the loss experienced once this is no longer required, can be quite phenomenal.

I am pleased to hear that the support you received, has influenced your decision to help other Carers, who are going through experiences, similiar to your own and it would be lovely to hear your future stories, of your experiences helping others caring for loved ones with dementia, and the impact that this is having on you and those that you encounter.

Best wishes

Julia
