About: Airedale General Hospital

What I liked

I received a total hip replacement at Airedale General Hospital on 28/09/12. An operation of this nature, perhaps routine nowadays but still major surgery, and a stay in hospital, albeit short, are never going to be pleasant experiences. However, all those with whom I came into contact --- pre-operative, during the operation and post-operative --- certainly did their best to see me through these rather difficult days.

The man allocated to me on my arrival was very reassuring, as were the surgeon and his theatre team who did what they had to do in a kindly but very efficient manner. After the operation, both in Recovery and on Ward 9, I was impressed by the genuine friendliness and concern for my wellbeing shown by the nursing staff I met. Now, at home, I continue to receive care of the highest professional standard.

A most welcome though unexpected discovery was the quality, presentation and variety of the food provided. Tkose involved in the planning and cooking deserve a great deal of credit.

Anything else?

To inculcate such a caring approach among all levels of nursing staff, the initiative may have to come from the top, but the really important work of creating and maintaining standards in work and attitudes, the traditional nursing virtues, is very much in the hands of different tiers of management. I feel that a particular word of praise in this respect is merited by the sister of Ward 9.
