My mum was admitted to the hospital in mid July with a bleed on the brain and left on a trolley in a corridor for what seemed like hours (it was about 1. 1/2 hours).
Because of the bleed she was very confused and couldn't remember anything that had happened to her - including the fact that she couldn't walk and where she was.
She was placed on a ward and within the first week of being in there she had 2 falls. The first fall she hurt her shoulder and then the second fall she was apparently checked over by a doctor who said she was OK. 3 days later when I was holding her hand, she winced and I noticed once of her wrists was swollen and after pointing this out to the nursing staff, she was x-rayed and it was found that she had a broken wrist and a cast was fitted.
It was then decided that she would be sent to a rehab home - once there (in a room on her own bearing in mind that she still had the memory problems as already mentioned) she had 2 falls, the second fall causing a broken hip. She was then re-admitted to the hospital to have a operation on her hip.
She was then sent to a ward and was as far away from the nursing station as she could possibly get, once again resulting in another fall and after remonstrating with the staff (who at this point had no idea of the fact that she had been in the hospital already for about 8 weeks and she was very confused and had memory problems) they moved her within sight of the nurses station.
The staff on the ward have been great and there are some of the support workers and nursing staff who deserve medals as big as bin lids for the work they do. One of the problems she has had is not being able to sleep as there was a patient in one bed in the ward who was constantly shouting out, there was another patient who screamed like a banshee - how is a patient expected to recover under these circumstances?
