"Referral to a specialist"

About: Newton Abbot Community Hospital / General surgery Torbay Hospital / General medicine

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was referred from Shiphay Manor Surgery, for a problem with her hand, We were saw by the specialist at Newton Abbot Hospital then one in Torbay Hospital, this was inconclusive.

We then went back to the doctors, still in pain, who was going to refer her to a different specialist in another area, but they forgot, which I found out several months later when our appointment didn't arrive.

I have now contacted Newton Abbot to make the appointment for the referral, the receptionist was most helpful and understanding and said he woud notify me if any earlier appointments came through, as the first one avaliable is 2 months from now. This problem has been ongoing now for nearly a year and I have one frustrated daughter

Make sure the patient and carer voice is part of the commissioning process.

Dear Losing Faith,

Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience with your daughter's care. I'm sorry to hear you have had problems with the referral but am glad it seems to be resolved now.

I know that Shiphay Manor Surgery does not like to hear of problems like this and would like the chance to look into the reason for the delay. If you feel able, please would you contact the practice manager, Mark Thomas? He can be contacted on 01803 605359.

Alternatively, you may like to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS). The South Devon and Torbay PALS manager is Dilys and can be contacted on 01626 357035 or dilys.slater@nhs.net. She will be able to listen to your experience, give advice, and follow up with whoever necessary in the health service.

I hope the uncertainty with your daughter's hand is resolved as soon as possible.

With best wishes,

Jo Curtis
