"lack of communication following hip replacement"

About: Dr Gray's Hospital / Orthopaedics (Bones, Joints and Fractures)

(as the patient),

The day after I had my hip done we sat all the evening (until 12 midnight) waiting to be put to bed. I discovered afterwards that there had been a fire in the town and staff had been transferred to A & E.

The bad thing was that no-one told us what was going on. If someone had just come and explained we would have felt much happier (and we did need the loo! )

Hello

I'm really sorry that you were not able to get to bed or to the toilet because the staff were busy elsewhere. It is important that staff keep patients informed if there is going to be a delay in the provision of their personal care needs.

I find that most folks are Ok with that as long as they know how long they are going to have to wait. I'm personally going to go to the ward and speak to them about this and I'm really sorry you were kept waiting.

It's really hard to get the staffing right to help us cope with "extra" incidents like this but we will look at it. Maybe we should have called staff in rather than take them from the ward on this occasion.

I hope you are getting on Ok after your operation and getting about a bit. Thanks for using this website.
