"Absolutely the most appalling care you are likely..."
About: East Surrey Hospital East Surrey Hospital Redhill RH1 5RH
What I liked
I was admitted to an orthopaedic ward at Redhill. The care I received was completely varied but being young I was able to at least speak up for myself. I was on a ward where I was the youngest and was disgusted by the treatment some of the older patients got. I commented that one of the patients looked extremely yellow and didn't seem herself and was told she is fine, the next day she passed away. I'm absolutely disgusted that they did not listen or at least go and check on her obvious illness going downhill.
I could not walk for the majority of my stay and was treated by the doctors as a second class citizen. I am of medical background. I dislocated my thumb on an orthopaedic ward yet it took a week of begging for an X-ray because I was told there was nothing wrong with it despite it being taped up with medipore tape. The doctors attitude was 'oh that should do'. Politics got in the way of the majority of my treatment due to me being seen by a consultant in another trust. It was very money orientated as opposed to patient!
Now...I await surgery on my back (I'm in a wheelchair) and my thumb which is splinted.
The ward manager and sister was fantastic but need to control their staff a bit more. Drug trolleys were left open and unattended.
My advise to anyone...go to another hospital!
What could be improved
Being spoken to like an adult as opposed to a child.
Clean the ward more.
Lessons on how to deal with patients with dementia for all staff. Shouting is not the answer!
