"Not men friendly"

About: Darent Valley Hospital

What I liked

The hospital was clean and well maintained. Clinics and appointments were generally on time. My doctor/consultant care was generally good.

What could be improved

I was not able to discuss my prostate and male health issues. This is because the only option for men with male health issues is to speak to female nurses and female nurse-practioners. It is disappointing that a hospitality that says it has an agenda for equality and diversity cannot appoint a male urology nurse. It seemed incredible to the nurses I did speak with that men may actually prefer to discuss some issues with a man and not a woman, however medically qualified or experienced the nurses were.

Thank you for your comments about the difficulty you experienced discussing your condition with a female nurse. It is not always possible to appoint, or find, nurses of both genders for all conditions, (nationally, only 10% of nurses are male, so we don't always have a choice of candidates etc) - but I appreciate your view that this would have been helpful for you. I will address this issue with the manager of the service, so that when a vacancy next arises, we bear in mind that a mix of genders would be helpful.

Many thanks for making this constructive suggestion for our urology service.
