I guess the doctors in Bristol feel overwhelmed and worn out, and they get frustrated when they cannot diagnose a problem. I have visited Frenchay A&E 3 times with severe abdominal pain, the doctors were brash and impatient with me, saying that they just don't know what is wrong with my tummy. It feels like they wanted me out of the hospital fast, I guess they felt I was either making up the symptoms or they just had no name for what was wrong. When they could not figure out what was wrong with me, their reaction could have been more scientific, they shouldnt just brush me off but keep asking questions and doing tests until they got an answer to diagnose my symtoms. They kept telling me I have IBS, can someone have IBS continually layed in bed unable to go to work for 10 months.

The last 10 months I felt like I was living in the deep jungle not Great Britain. I have since requested a referral to go to Birmingham hospital because I am frustrated and fed up with the grossly appalling treatment in Bristol. I am having abs pain and diarrhoea as I write this.

Dear Mr Gayle – I am sorry that you did not have a positive experience of A&E and that you would not be able to recommend a friend. The primary aim of the emergency department is to treat patients admitted with symptoms and injuries which need urgent and immediate attention.

Unfortunately where the cause of a patient’s condition cannot easily be determined, in circumstances such as yours, the recognised practice is to refer the patient back to the care of their GP. The GP would then make a referral to an appropriate specialty area according to the patient’s symptoms for further investigation. I assume from your statement that your GP will have discussed the options with you, and this is why you are attending Birmingham.

I do hope that your appointment at Birmingham is successful and they will be able to help you by diagnosing and treating your condition.
