About: Luton & Dunstable Hospital

What I liked

My wife gave birth to twins in April 2012. During the early hours, she started to get severe pains. She phoned the midwife and was told to come in. We went to Maternity and were given our own room after approx 10mins wait at the most. My wife was checked and was told an emergency cesarean would be required. My wife was taken to theatre straightaway, no waiting and gave birth to twin boys.

The instructions/care/support before, during and after the cesarean was exceptional and we were well informed of everything. Once my wife gave birth, she was taken to the ward and given instructions about everything to help her with twins. After the birth we were taken to a ward, where we stayed for an hour or so (this was not waiting time, but time given to us to settle down). Once we were ready to go, the nurse took us to the main ward where my wife spent 4 days.

During thes four days, the midwives ran their socks off for my wife and I. I was only allowed to visit certain hours, but my wife said the care and attention provided to her was exceptional. The midwives helped us alot. As we had twins, it was very difficult for us, but the midwives were patient, caring and understanding.

I had family coming to see us from London who said that the Luton Maternity Wards were much more nicer than the maternity wards they either visited or gave birth in, in hospitals in London.

What could be improved

There really is nothing that my wife and I can come up with. I would possibly suggest less visiting hours for other family members as no matter how assertive you are with family, they still come in large numbers and it can get very distressing for the patient and other patients. Also possibly slightly longer for the designated partner. However, this is just my opinion and the hours suit some, may not suit another.

Anything else?

I think the midwives can be exceptionally proud of themselves and each and every one that attended my wife was caring, attentive and helpful. My wife was regularly checked up on, even when she required no help, to see if she is ok.

If my wife wanted a hand feeding, changing etc she would ge it instantly. Any items that my wife required, she would get them instantly. Even for me if asked for something on behalf of my wife, I was attended to instantly.
