"Above standard care, thank you"

About: Croydon University Hospital

What I liked

The friendliness of the A&E Staff during a stressful time when my nephew split his ear open.

The short period of time to get seen by a doctor.

The patience of the nurse looking after my nephew.

What could be improved

To have an onsite plasics department, we got refered to another hospital after initial treatment.

Thank you for your kind comments which have been passed onto the A&E team. We hope you nephew is recovering well from his injury

In response to your point about plastic surgery not being available at Croydon University Hospital – our team here are extremely good at general surgery for children and young people but reconstruction work is a specialised type of surgery which is commissioned at major trauma and specialised surgical centres.

At CUH we have protocols about immediate treatment and stabilising and, if required, transfer or later referral to the specialised centre (as happened with your nephew).

The reason for this approach is a combination of the numbers of these kinds of injuries against the number of plastic/reconstructive surgeons able to carry out this type of work

The evidence is that there are better outcomes for patients when they are operated on by teams who have greater experience and larger caseload.

Hope this answers your question but if you want more help you can email our PALs team TalkToUs@croydonhealth.nhs.uk
