"Appalled, supposedly intelligent dr's ?"

About: Lincoln County Hospital

What I liked

Night staff nurses on the children's ward.

What could be improved

My 8year old son was admitted on a Thursday evening with severe abdominal pain query appendicitis. After seeing surgeons and various doctors he was discharged Friday afternoon with a diagnosis of inflamed bowel. He was re admitted on the Saturday evening via ambulance to a and e, in a and e he was given oramorph. The pain then settled a little. He was discharged again Sunday morning after being told to start movicol as the diagnosis was now constipation ! He was asked to return on Monday morning for an ultrasound as they don't do them at Lincoln on a Sunday ( madness). He then returned, again, on the Sunday night in agony. The breakfast staff told he was nil by mouth ( not a dr or a nurse ) only to then find out he is not on the list for a scan ! He still remains as an inpatient on the children's ward, currently waiting to see a consultant after demanding to know what is going on.

Tomorrow my son will have been in absolute agony with abdo pain for a week ! This is absolutely appalling for any child. He has hardly eaten since last Tuesday, either rolling around crying in pain or dozing in and out of sleep.

A complete lack of communication between all the staff involved. The drs seem to be worse, how can one suggest starting movicol but another one doesn't read the notes so doesn't know this ?

Disgusted in Lincoln hospital.

Two years ago I made a complete about staff on the children's ward and it seems nothing has changed. I will be making a formal complaint about this. It would be bad enough for an adult but a child suffering has got to be worse ?

I wonder if the dr's have children ?

I am very sorry that you have had such a difficult time with the care of your son and I hope he is now recovered and has returned home. I note you have said you would be making a formal complaint - if you have done so then we will be able to investigate and respond to your concerns through that process. If however you haven't then perhaps you would like to contact us at: patient. involvement@ulh. nhs. uk and we would be very interested in looking into your concerns in more detail. It is hard for me to comment without further information but please accept our apologies; it is always a worry coming to hospital and even more so when a child is ill and we recognise that the child and parents need support and reassurance; we clearly did not manage to give this to you.
