"Learning about diabetes"

About: Northampton General Hospital (Acute) / Diabetic medicine Sheffield PCT

(as the patient),

I would like to thank the diabetes care team led by Dr Charles Fox for the delivery of a life changing course.

I have had Insulin Dependent Diabetes for 28 years and in January this year attended a DAFNE course. I learnt things on this course which I have not learned in 28 years of diabetes care.

I have diabetes related retinopathy (damage to blood vessels in my eyes) Diabetic neuropathy (extremely painful nerve damage)and necrobiosis (resulting from ulcers in my leg. All of this at 31 years of age.

DAFNE provided some hope coupled with my precise insulin regime via an insulin infusion pump funded by the Primary Care Trust has provided me with the opportunity to prevent my complications worsening and move a step nearer to a more "normal" life.

But why have the PCT stopped the runnning of these courses for the next 12 mnonths you may ask? Money? Short term gain equals long term cost so Northampton PCT saving a few pounds now and radically changing diabetes self care for long term health improvements my money would certainly be on the latter.

Northampton PCT understands the important role that DAFNE plays.

For this reason we are using funding we have received to continue the DAFNE programme this year.
