"Personality disorders in the UK."

About: Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust / Adult mental health

(as the patient),

The information about, and NHS treatment for, personality disorders are severely falling short in most parts of the UK. I run an online site for people in the UK with BPD and most of their stories are the same...doctors dismiss them although they are a helpless cause or show no empathy towards their suffering. There is very little offered in the way of support unless/even if, they are in a crisis and virtually no follow ups are given. Many people with PD's feel put off asking for help in the lead up to a crisis as they are often told there is nothing anyone can do for them unless they have actually reached breaking point. I believe it is this treatment that also adds to the stigma attached, especially with BPD, as it may be the only time some professionals have contact with Borderlines. I would like to see more community groups set up, more information available for both patients and their families on self help techniques and how to deal with crisis situations and for GP's to have a better understanding of this section of mental health. I would love to get involved myself in my own area - Telford and Wrekin/ Shropshire, and help raise awareness but lack the support to do so.

Thank you for your posting.

As an organisation we are pledged to involve Service Users and Carers in discussions and joint working with front line staff and service management, using everyone's input to challenge thinking and continuously improve services. Please contact your local Mental Health Team, or the Shropshire & Telford Mental Health Involvement Team on 01743 255769 where Martin and Emma would be pleased to speak to you about involvement opportunities and developments in your area.

There is also a vibrant user network in Telford sponsored by Telford Council called 'Listen not Label'.

Mrs Kath Chambers, our Patient Experience Lead, would also welcome a conversation with you and she can be contacted on 01543 414555.

With best wishes

Dear Ingrid

I have read your comments and also passed them on to one of our psychologists Jurai - these are her comments below.....

"I have read your comment on services for people with personality disorders. Currently, in the Trust we have a system of representation to the service user and carer involvement committee. For the psychological services, we already have our service users and carer representatives currently.

However, I would like to meet you, if that would be possible, to discuss ways in which we could collaborate together on particular projects as and when they arise.

Pease contact me on jurai.darongkamas@sssft.nhs.uk or 01543 431564 if you are interested in taking this forward."

Best wishes and looking forward to hearing from you Ingrid,

Jurai

Dr Jurai Darongkamas (Ms.)
