"Excellent nursing and medical care, but..."

About: Leighton Hospital

What I liked

I was admitted to ward 13 for elective surgery.

The standard of care was good. Nursing staff were under a lot of pressure, yet still afforded time if it was needed. I was kept informed about my progress and the theatre staff, anaesthetist and surgeon were very professional. There was a good mixture of senior and junior staff, and all staff were supportive and friendly. I was treated fairly and was given adequate pain relief.

What could be improved

I did have some concerns about general cleanliness, mainly in the bathroom and toilet areas, which were often quite dirty. When I found a soiled incontinence pad on the the floor of a toilet, raised the matter with a member of the nursing team, and it was attended to immediately. As someone who works in the scientific wing of company that deals with the control of infections, I would have liked to seen some better infection control practices observed.

Anything else?

I am grateful to all the staff for the care I received.

My surgery was cancelled 6 times, so it was a relief to get it done.

Food was reasonable most of the time.

Response from Leighton Hospital

Many thanks for taking the time to comment on your recent stay on Ward 13. We appreciate the positive feedback about the majority of your stay with us. I have discussed your comments regarding the cleanliness with the Ward Manager which have now been actioned.

The Housekeeper has drawn up an hourly chart to be completed by the ward domestic and has printed new signs for the toilets to inform patients that, if they have any concerns, to speak to a member of staff who will arrange cleaning.

Once again thank you for your comments and I can assure you that the actions described will be monitored closely by myself and the Ward Manager on Ward 13.

Sandra Glover, Modern Matron.
