"Absolutely disgusting, horrified & shocked."

About: The New Selby War Memorial Hospital

What I liked

Having used the NHS direct service relating to concerns about some painful lumps in my 9yr old son's neck that were not improving with painkillers, we were referred directly to the out of hours GP. The out of hours GP called me and ran through some points over the phone, then he asked me to take my son into the hospital so he could check out the lumps. (My son already has a recently diagnosed thyroid problem).

On arrival at the hospital we were treated with dignity & respect by the man who let us inside The GP however was obnoxious, rude, practically told me off for bring my son out at that time of night & for using the resource!!! Not only am I absolutely disgusted to be treated like this, I am even more angry when we only went there at his request.

I cannot believe someone would be so arrogant, so rude & so patronising. He even made comments such as 'well what would I know, I'm just the GP'! To say I am shocked is an understatement. I am not surprised this man is working on out of hours surgery, I hope nobody else troubles him through the night because clearly he is too important to provide the service in which he is employed.

What could be improved

A different doctor, one who displays concern, compassion or even one who is mindful of the simple fact my son has had alot of issues in the past few months which has heightened my tension when other symptoms appear from nowhere. I have never had the misfortune to meet such an arrogant man in my entire life & I hope I never do again. My son was disgusted by the tone he used & this whole thing took place in front of my son.

Anything else?

I am disgusted that we were treated in this way & that someone can be allowed to be so rude & arrogant when supposedly going about his duties. If I had not been asked to go to the hospital, I would not have presented my son there at that time of night. I had tried to avoid this by calling the NHS helpline first. At the end of the day this is not an enjoyable experience, so the last thing you expect when you arrive to an out of hours surgery is to feel that you are disturbing the GP and causing him a problem by being there. I just went as he had asked us to go there!

I’m sorry that your visit to the unit was not a positive one. I have forwarded your comments back to the NHS Choices Team as York Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust does not manage the minor injuries unit at Selby War Memorial Hospital. This unit is managed by Harrogate Foundation Trust and I’ve asked the NHS Choices Team to send this to the appropriate contact. In the meantime, you can also contact Harrogate’s Patient Experience Team on 01423 555499
