"Waiting time was awful"

About: University Hospital Of North Durham

What could be improved

Please ensure that more doctors are available in the A&E.

Anything else?

I brought my child to the hospital at 9.00 pm on 2.8.2012 because of finger injury (finger stuck in the door). We went in to see the nurse at about 9.30 pm and we were told that a doctor will assess whether there is a need for an x-ray. To our disappointment, we waited from 9.30 pm to 11.55 pm and only was told that the waiting could be longer because of other emergency. Thereafter, we decided to cancel everything and just see another doctor at a clinic the next morning.

My concerns are these. Why we were not told about this situation earlier? Why there were not enough doctors on duty at the A&E, being such a critical and important department where emergency can happen at any time and often unpredictable. I am not complaining about other emergency, what my concern is the number of doctors on duty at the emergency department. Another concern is should a priority be given to a child in the circumstances?
