What could be improved
Last night at approx 8.30 my husband sliced the end of his finger resulting in copious amounts of bleeding. I contacted NHS direct who gave me appropriate advice. They then rang back at around 9 p.m. and when they realised that the wound had not stopped bleeding told me to take my husband to Selby Hospital as it was open until 10 p.m
We arrived at 9.15 with the wound still bleeding to find that the unit was closed (9 p.m.). A woman came to the door and informed us that the unit closed at nine and that we would have to go to York. I spoke to the out of hours doctor service on the phone but they advised the same. People were still being let into the hospital to see the out of hours doctor because they had an appointment.
It was only later that I gave further thought to this and became angry at the fact that my husband was turned away with a bleeding wound by someone who was probably a nurse. In any case there was obviously a doctor in attendance at the clinic. Surely that is against the spirit of caring for people to turn anyone away in that condition. It was clear that we were not going to get into the hospital for treatment last night.
I would hope that I will get a reply to this - I am sending a further letter to the hospital authority in due course.
