"Very disappointing so much so I felt compelled to..."

About: The Royal Liverpool University Hospital

What I liked

The below comments I hope only serve as something constructive for this department and most importantly, for those who are either in the process of being in the waiting list to be seen by consultant or those who are scheduled for an operation.

It's important for me to mention that the reception staff and nurses working in this department were nothing but helpful and very professional each time I visited St Paul's Eye Unit for when I was suffering from a lazy eye/strabismus.

What could be improved

The difficulty with this department is that over the last few years there is a void of specialists for particularly strabismus.

I was suffering double vision primarily when I was looking in the down-gaze, for things such as reading or for when I was looking at things close up so it was determined that I required an operation to my right eye correct this problem.

I went through the operation and it was unsuccessful to the extent that it completely over compensated my vision in which that I was suffering double vision when looking in straight ahead and looking upwards, in fact I had extreme difficulty in looking upwards due to the muscle that was operated on being held back.

Due to my reluctance to have another operation by the same consultant or by someone who didn't specialise in strabismus, I reluctantly sought out a consultant who did and had to bear the cost of this because I went privately.

Anything else?

Ultimately, I would like those who have this condition to seriously consider who their consultant is and what they specialise in. I suggest that if you are in doubt, do your research and find a consultant who does at a different hospital and transfer to them, I can't emphasise just how important it is to do this because through the time it takes to be seen by a consultant and to wait for an operation is far too long if something goes wrong.
