"Great staff, great care, long wait!"

About: John Radcliffe Hospital

What I liked

Went into A&E after having lost a lot of blood through a deep cut and was seen right away, wound bandaged up and was given a packed lunch to eat, which was really appreciated. All the staff who dealt with me were very courteous and fully explained what was happening. The department itself was spotlessly clean - indeed, there was a cleaner there the whole time sweeping and scrubbing the floor.

What could be improved

You expect a wait when you go into A&E and I was told it would be two hours. In the end it was 3 and a half hours, although I was given pain relief during this time. The most frustrating part is not knowing how long you have to wait - people are called out by name. The hospital actually has a computerised "queue" showing how long each patient has been waiting - it would be great if either that information was put onto the large flatscreen TV, which was just showing NHS adverts, or you were given a number when you arrived, so you could tell how close to your number you were.

Thank you for posting your comments - we are delighted your experience at our Emergency Department was a positive one, and we hope you are recovering well from your injury. We have worked hard during the past year on improving the patient experience and when we get feedback like this it shows that we are on the 'right track'. You quite clearly identify the issues which are important to you when you visit hospital - respect, clear information, professionalism and cleanliness. It was thoughtful of you to share your positive experience - our staff have been made aware of your comments.
