"I hope to never experience anything like this..."

About: University Hospital (Coventry)

What I liked

Taking my partner home from the observation ward, one of the worst experiences of my life!

What could be improved

Staff were rude.

I was told I should not be on the ward, it was not visiting time (by a HCA). Partner had just been admitted following RTA.

Later she told me meal times were protected and I should not be on the ward. My partner had his dominant arm in plaster and had damage to his other hand and needed help to eat.

A very elderly gentlemen in the opposite bed was not helped with his food, so I guessed my partner would be treated the same. I stayed to help my partner eat and drink.

HCA mentioned above was laughing and joking and feeding cakes to 2 police officers on the ward, buzzers went ignored despite patients being in obvious distress.

Senior nurse told us surgery would be required to my partner's arm and that he would be transferred to the orthopaedic ward. When I asked the details, she replied, "you know as much as me"!

Cleaning was scant with areas of beds, side tables left uncleaned.

Anything else?

I am completely shocked by the general lack of care and apparent disorganisation on this ward.

Staff looked disorganised, I realise they are busy, but multi-tasking does not seem to work, it would be better to complete one task and then move to the next, rather than leaving a job half finished to go elsewhere and forget to finish the original task.

My partner was informed he could be discharged at 11am, we finally left for home at 17.50.
