"What a nightmare."

About: University Hospital Lewisham

What I liked

Diganosed with alow placenta at 34 weeks, only to have a private scan next day and told it's posterior! Then told at 39 weeks we needed an emergency c-section because doctor chose wrong baseline, fortunately I argued despite doctors attitude (I'm still polite when I argue).

After waters breaking and reaching the 48 hour mark the midwife I spoke to and the consultant tried to scare us into coming in, only I happen to read stats on home births V hospital. As it happened my fiance was exhausted so we came. The birth itself wasn't too bad and the doctors were actually good and friendly, the midwife was about as friendly as a block of ice.

At this point I will add all the community midwifes barring one were excellent and friendly.

I was very disappointed with not being allowed to wait until the placenta had stopped pulsing before cutting but was too tired to argue.

The postnatal care in the hospital was appauling and this is what left us with a nightmare experience, the midwives were extremely rude , unhelpful, unfriendly and some of them had problems talking even simple sentences. The place itself was likely a sauna and must be a great place for germs

A women is extremely vunerable after birth and deserves decent care, she does not need to be told that breast feeding is easy and baby will work it out, look at the stats for breast feeding in the UK it's shocking. Also being told you were the one to choose to have a baby is horrible when you are worried. Don't bother breast feeding my two had the bottle another said.

My fiance was worried and got no help by the staff.

After waiting for two days in hospital we were told the peditrician was still not available so we walked, rather than being honest the midwives constantly acted vague.

The birth wasn't registered with the hospital.

Where do I stop, there were numerous mistakes and should we have another baby, hell will freeze over before we come back.

What could be improved

Replace the postnatal staff with people that want to work there and want to help. Hospitals are scary places for most of us, I appreciate there maybe some challenging patients but the staff shouldn't be rude and unhelpful to those of us are not.
