What I liked

Two nurses were attentive, explained that they would be seeing me through the process and were pleasant.

What could be improved

I passed out after several unsuccessful attempts to insert a needle into the back of my hand, and awoke being put on a trolley. I was in my outdoor clothes and shoes.

I was later wheeled into surgery still on the same paper sheet with a large amount of mud on it and had a pacemaker inserted into my chest.

I was not told anything when the critical situation alarms went off as my blood pressure dropped suddenly while the surgeon was trying to wrench the old pacemaker from my chest. I was aware of frantic activity and the crash team but nobody talked to me.

The nurses who said they would be overseeing my care went off duty

I was told that I did not need to lie down when the line was taken out of my hand as I was " a big

strong man" until I mentioned that I had passed out earlier and my blood pressure was very low. I felt this attitude to be patronising and ignorant of why people faint.

After I had dressed ready to leave, a nurse who had no previous dealings with me, approached without introducing herself and undid my clothing without even asking and poked around my wound site. She had come directly from another patient and I had noticed that she constantly touched her hair and mouth after washing her hands.
