"The contraceptive implant"

About: City Health Care Partnership CIC / Sexual health

(as the patient),

I'm going to university this October with my boyfriend (of two years) and we felt that it was time to find a better method of contraception than condoms. After reading some awful reviews about the procedure I was a little anxious as to what to expect, but there is really nothing to worry about! Like any injection you feel the needle being inserted, but its very quick and doesn't hurt unless you want it to (psychological? ). For a couple of hours following its insertion I was very careful not to put to much pressure on my arm but you soon realise this isn't necessary and can carry on as normal despite the slight stiffness. It has now been 3 days and I have nearly completely forgotten about it, and fingers crossed, so far I haven't experienced any side effects!

If you are thinking about having the implant I really would recommend ignoring YouTube and internet reviews. I think many people just want to find side effects and problems with things, you just have to ignore these people and don't let yourself imagine things which aren't there/blame the implant for weight gain etc...

Overall, I think it's something you just have to try, nobody knows how it will suit you, and thankfully its easily reversible if problems occur.

My implant was fitted by Dr Rachel McCollum at Beverley Family Planing- I couldn't have asked for a better doctor, really calming and chatty to both myself and my boyfriend (who was more anxious than I was! ).
