"Appalling how someone can get something that wrong..."

About: Queen's Hospital, Burton Upon Trent

What I liked

After my partner went in for an operation I found some of the staff to be very pleasant. Also, whenever I rang to enquire on her well being, they were fabulous

What could be improved

The operation turned out to have been unnecessary, and an ultrasound scan that found a cyst/ tumour in the uterus turned out to have been wrongly interpreted, and in fact showed part of the bowel. Further to this, my partner was informed it had to come out now, or she could risk losing her entire reproductive system, therefore not really giving her a choice in the matter! I fail to see how an operation can have been undertaken without a biopsy, or a second opinion. Cutting someone open to remove something that is not, and never was, there is completely unacceptable. Add to that an 8 week recovery time (minimum), and a bladder infection contracted when the catheter went unchanged and backed up, despite staff being asked to change it, and I am disgusted. The only thing that disappoints me is that I was unable to persuade my partner to make a formal complaint against the hospital for this appalling care.

Anything else?

If going for an operation, please get a second opinion. There is no way this should have been allowed to happen, even down to the fact that we were told how large the tumour was (that wasn't actually there), as well as what type it was. There was no apology for putting my partner through this unnecessarily, and having seen the consultant there, I doubt there ever will be.

I am sorry that your partner’s experience at Burton Hospitals in July 2010 was not as good as it could have been.

We aim to provide the best care to all of our patients and value feedback which will enable improvements to be made.

In order to do this, it would help us greatly if you could provide us with further details. You may do this via our Patient Advice and Liaison Team on 01283 593110 (voicemail for out of hours calls) or email: pals@burtonft.nhs.uk
