The '18 week treatment rule' is being blatantly breached for orthopaedic surgery at this hospital. The PCT know about this. The PCT can fine the hospital for each breach. (Worth thinking about!) In my case, I should have had surgery by now but have been informed that the June and July lists are full and not to expect to be given an appointment before August. I also know of someone who has been waiting for a hip replacement at this hospital for over 9 months. I was told by the PCT my GP could expediate matters. Not true. A total disappointment. Why even bother having the 18 week rule, the PCT and the SHA? In my experience, none have performed as expected.

Thank you for your comments and we are sorry you are having to wait for your surgical appointment with us. It is important to state that measured across all of our specialties, the trust does meet the national target of treating 90% of all surgical patients within 18 weeks of referral.

However, the trust is experiencing significant demand in orthopaedics - which is replicated nationally - and the PCT and GP Clincal Commissioning Groups locally are aware of this. To meet this demand, we are increasing our own capacity locally through the appointment of additional staff, and creating extra operating theatre capacity.

We believe that with these steps we should be able to meet the 18 week target in orthopaedics by the end of the year. In the meantime we are seeing patients as soon as is possible and thank you for your patience.
