"A very unpleasant experience."

What could be improved

Staff attitudes/training issue

Anything else?

I had the misfortune of having blood tests taken today which was the second time in recent months. I arrived to an empty waiting area which was a welcome surprise. Sadly though I was seen by the same phlebotomist as in my first vist. I knew I was in for a painful time. I would regard my veins to be quite prominent and know one has ever had any difficulty obtaining blood from me before. The assistant was polite, however she was quite rough and applied excessive pressure when she inserted the needle. It felt like it had been rammed in. As she continued the pressure became quite intense. I commented that it really hurt, but her only response was to half smile. I was very pleased to leave. Several hours after leaving I am now left with a hard bruised lump in my arm.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of our services on the NHS Choices website. I apologise your experience of our phlebotomy service was not as it should have been and I will bring this matter to the attention of the senior phlebotomist to ensure staff are reminded of the need to be assuring and caring to al patients when taking blood specimens. Should you wish this matter to be further investigated please contact me at lorraine.lambert@stft.nhs.uk

Kind regards

Lorraine B Lambert

Chief Executive
