I have an elderly uncle who was admitted to East Surrey Hospital three weeks ago after suffering a fall. He is confined to bed unable to get to the shop. There are no facilities available to buy a daily paper. There are no working televisions.

So apart from the occasional visitor he is left lying in bed with nothing to occupy his mind. The radio is turned on low in the ward so he can't hear it. There are no staff who can help to get his hearing aid working.

He now appears to have picked up an eye infection and a cough since arrival.

The Queen's Jubilee is coming up, I am sure lots of hospital inpatients would appreciate being able to watch this historical event. Years ago television rooms were available that you could be wheeled into. Why are these facilities no longer available?

All I see when I visit is an elderly man who is physically frail being left to lie in bed all day.

We would really appreciate it if you could contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) which is available to listen to concerns, suggestions or queries and can help sort out problems quickly on your behalf. I’m sure we could help if we knew what ward your Uncle was on.

We do have two shops at the East and West Entrance that newspapers can be bought from. We have recently invested in state-of-the-art patient entertainment systems for our two new wards which include TV, radio and internet connection for each patient’s bed (free of charge) and we are planning to roll out the system to the rest of the hospital in the near future.
