"Thanks to the staff - consultant, doctors, nurses..."

About: University Hospital Of North Durham

What I liked

From the outset I was involved in all discussions about my treatment, the options, risks and aftercare. My surgeon was fantastic, I saw him during each visit and always had plenty of opportunity to ask questions. All of the nursing staff and assistants from ward 15 and the dressing clnic were also fantastic - whether in for weekly aftercare or during my time in the ward, I was always treated as an individual. I was so impressed how they worked as a team, giving you confidence in the continuity of treatment, providing a relaxed and reassuring atmosphere, making you smile, lifting your spirits when all you really want to do is get out and go home. They work so hard and I cannot praise them enough. I am not sure I would be so polite in their position given the way I saw some patients spoke to them.

Beyond the staff --- the food was institutional but actually very good; the ward was light and airy. After all, how many hotel rooms give you a night-time view of a world heritage site?

What could be improved

This is a relatively new hospital but the build quality should have been better - no doubt others will argue who to blame for the construction and finish, but we are asked to comment about cleanliness - why wasn't this considered more during the design and construction? For example - sealants that discolour or peel around hand basins, washroom floors, windows, wall panels - pay more attention earlier please rather than make it impossible for the cleaners. Architects, construction engineers and clerks of work take note.

Anything else?

Why, in the 21st century, charge for tv and internet? Penny pinching to the extreme.
