"A mixed bag"

About: St Thomas' Hospital (London)

What I liked

Treated for an infection in March 2012 when the service received had been somewhat mixed. I has been sent away by the duty nurse at reception as a non-urgent case and told to come back in the morning. Unfortunately, my symptoms got a lot worse overnight and the next day I was very poorly and had to ring for an ambulance. However the service I received had been excellent by the doctor and surrounding staff who treated me although I had to manage to persuade reception again that I had been an urgent case. Visted again in May 2012 due to a problem related to the original infection since this service had all the orginal records of my treatment and had been simply appalled by the casual and uninterested approach to my problem by the junior doctor that saw me after waiting over 6 hours to be seen. Spoke to the registrar who also refused to investigate the problem and was extremely rude and obstructive towards providing a reasonable service. Tried to argue that the problem had to be investigated by my GP and not the hospital. Would seriously reconsider whether or not to visit this Unit in the future when faced with a medical emergency.

What could be improved

Poor attitudes on the part of some of the staff in the A & E Unit. The registrar on duty simply could not care less about my health problem and defensive about the lack of proper investigation conducted into my health problem while other staff simply lacked the experience to deal with patient health complaints to a competent standard.

Anything else?

Guy's and St Thomas Hospital is generally a very good hospital. However, there are some bad eggs in the A & E Unit which badly spoil the otherwise excellent reputation of this hospital.
