"Hydrotherapy"

About: Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust

(as the patient),

My great experience with the Regional Disability Team at Walkergate Park continues.

Following a broken hip last summer they are working hard to help me with core stability and strength using physio and various exercises at home. I have been paraplegic for 11 years after a bike accident and the recent fracture has left me with a shortened leg and misalignment of my pelvis, exacerbating my "chair shape".

Jill and David at the RDT decided that hydrotherapy would help. They have had some issues with staff shortage so my treatment has been a bit sporadic but they have sorted that now and yesterday I had a great session with a new guy, Mark, who clearly has a wealth of knowledge and experience, quickly working out what I needed and giving me some pretty strenuous stuff to do as well as spending a lot of time stretching out leg muscles that have been unused for years. First class.

If you are a wheelchair user and get the opportunity to have some hydrotherapy I recommend you grab it - it is really beneficial; after only a few sessions I already feel that I am sitting straighter in my wheelchair and just generally feeling better.

Hydrotherapy is a form of exercise in water utilizing the properties of buoyancy, water resistance and temperature, movement can be a lot easier in the water however temperature of the water can often cause fatigue in some individuals

All patients will receive a full physical assessment on referral to Physiotherapy and Hydrotherapy would be recommended by your Physiotherapist if utilizing the properties of water was thought to be beneficial in aiding your ability to move.

Goals for treatment would be negotiated with you prior to commencing any treatment plan with identified timescale for achievement and length of intervention.

Hydrotherapy is just one from of Physiotherapy technique to aid in improving/ maintaining physical functioning.
