"Nice clean Hospital with very friendly staff."

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead)

What I liked

This is my second visit to the QE Hospital for maternity services and the care I received was fantastic, the staff were understanding, friendly and great people to be around. Was a fantastic enrivoment to bring my daughter into this world.

What could be improved

The food! Sorry but I just couldn't eat much while I was there and had to come home before I starved. But this isn't the hospitals fault as every hospital is like that.

The visiting policy as my older sister was looking after my eldest daughter and she came on the day of my section with her child and my daughter and the receptionist told her I would have to come a get my daughter (I couldn't walk!) for her to visit because my neice may pass on germs to the newborn babies. I understand infection risks but this was just stupid.

Anything else?

I was in for my 4th c section and although I was very nervious the staff made me feel at ease. I had perviously been to the RVI and Sunderland royal hospital for 2 of the 4 sections and chose to go to Gatesheads QE because of the care I received. I felt very well looked after and knew my daughter was in safe hands. They listened to all my concerns and took the extra precautions needed for the risks i involved. Thank you everyone in the delivery suit and postnatal ward and to my consultant for delivering my little girl safely.

Thank you so much for your positive comments on the maternity unit at the QE. We pride ourselves on being "small enough to care, but big enough to cope" and we'll be sure to pass on all your comments to the team.

We're sorry that you felt our infection control measures hindered your family visiting time, unfortunately we follow national guidelines around issues such as these, but your comments will be passed on to our matron on the ward to see if there are any other solutions which may benefit other mothers in future.

We were also sorry to hear that you didn't like the quality of the food at the unit. We have recently invested more than £1million on our catering, and make food from scratch using quality ingredients.

If you want to make any suggestions on how we could improve catering for patients we'd be glad to pass on your views to our catering team for consideration. They have weekly meetings and discuss patient feedback, so we know they would be keen to hear your views. You can email those to contact.qe@ghnt.nhs.uk
