What I liked

Nothing! My partner visited the eye department at the royal in July last year after suffering from problems with his vision. He was told that he had bleeding at the back of the eyes and a build up of scar tissue. He was initially treated with a course of steroid tablets and had numerous tests and scans ( none of these were of the head) but they couldnt find what was causing it, nor could they name his condition. He has had laser treatment, steroid drops, and when his vision got so bad last year he was admitted for 3 days and had steroids through a drip. An op was scheduled just before xmas but as his vision had improved a week before the scheduled op, it was cancelled, as they felt it was no longer necessary. Since February this year the problem has got worse. The bleeding in his eyes is worse than ever, his vision is badly affected and he cannot work as a result. He was told by his consultant that if it got too bad to visit eye casualty. We did, and it was a waste of time and all the doctor did was prescribe more drops, that he was already taking and which obviously werent helping. He was told he needed to see a surgical consultant. An apt was made for an afternoon when there was no surgical consultant!! Which he didnt discover until we had made the trek to the hospital. He finally got to see the right surgical consultant last tues, and was told to come back on the friday for an ultrasound, which he did. Following the ultrasound the surgeon said he wanted to see him the following friday (today) to discuss setting a date for surgery, which he urgently needs. Because he cannot see properly, doesnt drive, and i work, he has been having an ambulance car to collect him for his apts. Despite him filling out the form for the car at his apt last friday, for his apt today, the car failed to turn up, causing him to miss his apt. And he now has to wait till may for another apt!!

What could be improved

Well clearly staff need to communicate with each other more, and they need to make sure when telling patients that an ambulance car is booked - that it is actually booked!!

Anything else?

I personally feel that the treatment my partner is getting is not acceptable, and if i had the money i would go private. Eyes are not something to be messed about with. They are a valuable part of our body and i dont feel that he is recieving the treatment he needs. And they are certainly not in a rush to sort it out as they are constantly messing up his apts.
