What I liked
Nothing.
My daughter was turned away from A and E on the grounds that she had not had diarrhoea and vomiting lasting more than 24 hours - it was only 21 hours! She was advised if she felt it necessary, to see her GP.
The GP receptionist showed more insight and my daughter was seen straight away by the GP and admitted into hospital.
What could be improved
1. Observation skills of a triage nurse - to recognise a patient who is dehydrated and weak and to take baseline observations of temperature, pulse and BP. My daughters pulse was 129 on admission, BP unrecordable at GP.
2. To consider previous medical history before making an erroneous judgement
3. Recognise that guidelines are not protocols and professional judgement needs to be applied to an individual.
4. Avoid making people feel 'small'
Anything else?
I find it unbelievable that a GP receptionist recognised a poorly patient and a qualified nurse did not. I have phoned the GP surgery to thank the receptionist for her prompt and appropriate action
"Unbelievable and humiliating."
