"Very poor level of care."

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital

What I liked

Nothing.

What could be improved

Everything.

Anything else?

My mother was a patient in this hospital in December 2011, and died there on the 19th December. However the hospital didn't see fit to inform the family that she had died, and the first we knew of it was when I went to vist her and found the room she was in had been cleared and another patient was in her bed. When I became upset, I was taken into a room and told by a nurse to shut up because I was upsetting the other patients! There was no explanation as to why the family weren't informed, and when I attempted to ask the matron she simply shrugged her shoulders and walked off.

The level of care shown to my mother was abysmal, and it was very distressing to see her dying in her bed, unwashed, and without adequate pain relief. It took the intervention of the Macmillan nurse to get the correct level of pain relief. But even then, the equipment administering it was often left empty. My nephew went to visit her and found the alarm going off - yet despite asking, not one member of staff came to attend to it. By the time I arrived it had been going off for a full twenty minutes. A member of staff finally came after half an hour and switched it off, which caused another alarm to go off. They then disconnected it! So there she was, dying from cancer, with no pain relief!

We have since complained but three months down the line we are still waiting for a response. No concern was shown to my mother, and no concern has been shown to us. Its an appalling place - don't go there!
