My 85 year old father who has Alzheimers was admitted after a fall.
He waited in casualty from 12 noon until almost midnight before he was admitted - by which time he was very hungry, very agitated and disagreeable - who wouldn't be? Whilst an inpatient he was left alone except for meals that were brought to him and the usual regular medical checks were taken.
He suffered badly from being alone and unstimulated. He did not understand what was happening most of the time and consequently became extremely depressed and began refusing to eat. Instead of understanding he was threatened with a drip. It was heartbreaking to watch.
I am sure for some people a single room alone would be fine but did the powers that be ever think of people like my dad?
