"Poor care of my mother (89yrs old)"

About: Weston General Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

I think there is an issue with some poor quality nursing care and lack of staff.

When my mother was admitted there was chaos from the start. She was taken by ambulance to a day ward. They thought she was going home. Finally admitted to a ward, where no one greeted her, no one knew she was coming. She entered the hospital an intelligent elegant woman and came out demorilised and weak, with worse problems than when she entered.

I visited every day, but the nurses were few and far between, so couldnt speak to them. I had to phone to get information. I put her into her bed every night, as there seemed to be no nurses to help, I took her to the toilet, which was often too late. She was left all day in filthy nightdress when there were clean ones in her cupboard. Incorrect bandages were put on her bed sores on her bottom. The wrong leg was highlighted in her file. She only had one shower in two weeks. Antibiotic not ordered and given late. Medication given late. Given Tramadol and Co codemol together for pain relief, and started hallucinating. I had to write in her file that this was to stop. No one spoke to my mother unless to do some medical checks. She should have had her leg bandaged every day, and it was left for 4 days and nights, leaking, stinking and as a result never recovered. I was advised by 3 nurses to put in a formal letter of complaint. This I did and got an apology for all the incidents that had occured.

So what!!

She has now died, and this experience did not do anything to prolong her life.
