"Quick action when family member became seriously ill"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde NHS Shetland

(as a relative),

Family member became seriously ill and required specialist services on UK mainland.

The NHS staff (inital nurses and doctors on night shift) quickly diagnosed severity of situation, initiated critical care with on island services, the anaesthetic team, radiology labs etc, and support from other services outwith NHS Shetland, namely the adult retrieval team based in Glasgow and ITU in ARI.

My family member was retrieved to specialist intensive care in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. We now have ongoing support of ITU staff ARI and Shetland nurse, Red Cross.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your family member’s recent emergency care. Given our location, it is more critical than ever that our emergency services staff work effectively with both adult and child retrieval teams to get seriously ill patients quickly transferred to more specialized care on the mainland.

It means a lot to staff to hear that their efforts have been recognized, and we appreciate your comments at what must have been a difficult time for you.

Simon Bokor-Ingram, Director of Clinical Services
