"Poor!"

About: Lister Hospital

What I liked

One or two nurses were particularly nice and chirpy!

What could be improved

I visited this unit three times within the space of three to four months as I was suffering with severe hyperemesis gravidarum in my first pregnancy. Finally upon my first visit I was seen promptly by the A and E sHowever, the two times prior to this I had to wait from twelve at night to five in the morning to be moved from the waiting room in 11b to a bed, each time a IV was fitted, it would take several attempts and being bumped around to various different staff to find a vein. Upon my first visit, after being fitted with and IV I had noticed that the stand to which it was attached was completely covered in dried blood. As a result I asked one of the nurses if she could perhaps wipe it off as I was very unhappy about such a lack of hygiene, I asked very politely and discretely, however I was met with what I can only describe was a dirty look, she then hmm'd, turned and walked away from me without even replying.. I then asked several other nurses if this could be seen to, all of which agreed and then never came back again, eventually I had to make a trip to the bathroom and clean the pole myself, being forced to touch the dried blood in the process. taff and when taken up to gyny I was given a private room to myself.

Anything else?

Upon my second visit the IV was not fitted properly resulting in it pulling out of my hand and blood pouring out everywhere, during which I pressed the button for the nurse as I was struggling to get out of bed and move to the hallways to reach a nurse without blood dripping everywhere (I didn't want to drip the blood everywhere and create a mess for the nurses to the clean up- I was in a private room) Despite pressing the button though, after quite a while no nurses turned up and so I was forced to drip blood along the hallways, I then found the nurses sat as the desks as per usual chatting very loudly despite it being in the middle of the night. The nurse who responded was very rude and unhappy about having to see to me.

On each occasion, after being admitted for severe dehydration and hypokalaemia, I was frustrated to find that despite checking up on me, my fluids were rarely changed when needed and so my stay was prolonged. The food given on the wards was often very poor, despite filling out the options for food choice, on each occasion, not once did I receive what was on the menu and on one occasion, when I asked that the nurse swap my meal for something else (I was given something I was allergic to and had not opted for) when my meal was swapped I received a meal that had been half consumed and cut up by another patient. I was extremely upset by this!

The wards were extremely noisey at night, mainly due to the nurses allowing the doors in the hallways to slam each time the entered or exited rooms. Upon discharge I was told several contradicting things about taking my medication. Overall, all three times I have visited this ward have been stressful and upsetting, all of this could have been avoided if only the nurses were a little more attentive and caring in their attitude.

It sounds like your experience of the Trust's inpatient gynaecology service was a poor one, but it is one that we would like to learn from to help improve the service for others. Whilst sharing your comments and feedback will help, we know that our senior nursing team would like to have a chance to discuss your concerns with you directly so that they can work with the gynaecology service to help them improve the care provide to women like you. We know that the quality of their service is often praised by many of their patients, but clearly this was not your experience and this needs to be put right. If you are willing, please drop us an e-mail to generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net and we will take it from there.
