North Bristol Health Authority-Southmead Hospital

SUNDAY, 11 MARCH 2012

It is now nearly 4 months since I had a procedure for the removal of a growth in my bladder and stayed as an inpatient on the Urology Ward at Southmead Hospital.

Physically the pain has gone and my bladder control is nearly back to normal.

Pshycologicaly my experience on this ward has destroyed my confidence in the NHS, I get bouts of acute depression, my level of self worth has taken a severe knock, I am unable to sleep more that an hour or so each night and I dread the thought that it might be necessary for me to stay as an in patient on this ward again.

I have to see the consultant again on the 16th March and I assume he will suggest my comming back in for the same procedure again because the pathology lab failed to make a full diagnosis of the type of cancer from my last pathology sample sent to them.

For Southmead Hospital to become a Hospital fit for purpose again

1. Get rid of the nursing staff that are not fit for purpose.

2. a. Employ nursing staff that are capable of showing compassion towards the patients in their care.

b. Respect the dignity and human rights of patients.

c. Listen to what patients say and not treat them as if they are invisible.

d. Nursing staff whilst on duty should leave their personal problems at home and give 100% of

their attention to the care and needs of their patients.

3. a. Proper ward management ensuring that there are regular ward rounds carried out by competent senior nursing staff.

b. Proper supervision and discipline of nursing staff.

c. A review of the competence of the pathology labs to ensure that they can correctly and accurat

Dear gorslasboy

I am sorry your experience in the Urology Department was so poor and that your dignity was not respected. The situation you describe is certainly not something we would wish for any of our patients. We do aim to learn from any complaint and I would welcome the chance to be able to arrange for a detailed investigation to be undertaken. This would allow us to fully understand the issues you have raised and to work with staff on the ward to learn and improve the experience for other patients of the Urology Service.

If you wish me to arrange this investigation please contact me via the following email link complaints@nbt.nhs.uk

In the meantime I have alerted the senior nursing staff at the Trust to your concerns to ensure they are aware of the issues and can react accordingly to ensure immediate improvements are made.

I hope that your return appointment was helpful and that a positive care plan can be implemented.

Kind regards – Steve Sykes
