"Care from delivery team fantastic, but conflicting information on maternity ward"

About: Tameside General Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

The care of the delivery team was fantastic. The negatives were:

- Ward cleanliness, toilets were disgusting, only seemed to get cleaned once a day.

- I was given contradictory advice by various staff. I.e. delivery team swaddled my baby after birth, nurse on ward told me off - even thought I hadn't swaddled her! Same with feeding, told I should be feeding every 3 hours, yet another nurse told me that if I've fed 3 times within the first 24 hours then that's excellent!! Confusing for a first time mum!!!

We are always pleased to received feedback both positive and negative regarding the care and advice we give on Ward 27 but without specific information about the birth it is sometimes difficult to comment on a specific case

The circumstances surrounding the birth of the baby may well have required some swaddling to preserve temperature and that later the well being of the baby no longer required any swaddling or extra layering. This should have been explained to you. However, with regard to the feeding of the baby; it is difficult to comment on this as we do not know if your baby was of a normal weight or gestation. We will be more than happy to look closer at the care received in your case if you would like to contact Margaret Porritt the Ward Manager on Ward 27 (0161 331 4005) or a Supervisor of Midwives 0161 331 6000.

With regard to the cleanliness of the ward we do have daily domestic assistance up to approximately 1.30 pm and again during the evening usually 5 – 7 pm. We display notices that should women have any concerns about the cleanliness of the ward they should speak to any member of staff so that the issue can be addressed with immediate effect.

We try at all times to maintain the appearance of our ward within the busy environment available to us.

I hope that my response goes some way towards addressing your concerns. Please do not hesitate to make contact if you would like to discuss further your concerns.

Best wishes.

Lesley Tones

Head of Midwifery & Women’s Services
