"Frustrating wait, but great care for my Day Care operation"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham / General surgery

(as the patient),

Had a hernia operation at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Arrived at the hospital for my 12 midday appointment, was told i was an afternoon case and in most cases would leave the same day, as it was a day care case. I felt the wait was a long one, and once I was taken through was asked to wait in a room until someone came to do my paperwork, it seemed the staff did not quite know who was where, a little bit confusing.

Eventually at approx 2.30pm I was taken to my bed where many patients were waiting to be discharged, many waiting many hours. If the morning patients had been discharged on time then the afternoon patients would not have had such a long wait for a bed. The staff were all very professional and kind so this helped the situation, but do feel they were under a lot of stress to try and get doctors to discharge patients.

I had my operation and the care was excellent, the hospital clean and a lovely cup of tea! I was one of the last patients to leave the department, and witnessed the staff cleaning and sterilising the beds etc very thoroughly which impressed me, also spoke to a volunteer who was as good as any member of staff which was nice.
