"dissappointing and potentially harmful"

About: Grantham & District Hospital

What could be improved

I was extremely disappointed with the treatment I received when taking my daughter to the paediatric department of Grantham Hospital. We had been refered to the department from A&E the night before following a suspect ECG for my daughter. I had to repeat the details of what had happened to my daughter including why we were there three times because no one chose to read the notes that had been sent with us. I felt that the lead nurse and consultant didn't want to listen to what my concerns were for my daughter, and passed me off as a parnaoid parent. They sent my daughter home with a suspected diagnosis of raynodes (as she had coold hands and feet) and dismissed her ECG as insignificant. I felt completely un listened to. I was still concerned about the suspected Long QT identified by the A&E consultant and so got a referral to a private heart consultant via my GP, who has since confirmed that there is evidence of borderline Long QT in the ECG taken and has sugested further tests to rule it out completely.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience and appreciate how worrying this must have been for you; I am also sorry that this response is so long after the episode. It will be difficult for me to respond without further details but would ask that you contact patient.involvement@ulh.nhs.uk if you would like me to investigate further. In the meantime please accept my apologies; even if there have been reasonable clinical decisions and judgments then clearly we have not explained or discussed these with you as well as we could have if you have been left so concerned. Thank you for taking the time to leave this feedback; please be assured that we are reading them now and acting upon them.
