"A lovely environment, and on the whole good. Some..."
About: New Richardson Hospital New Richardson Hospital Barnard Castle DL12 8HT
What I liked
A beautiful building, well kept. A lovely place to work I would think - and the rooms were light and airy. Most of the staff were welcoming and kind to my elderly mother, resident there for 10 days.
What could be improved
Some nurses were impatient. Taking water pills my mother required help to the loo more than most. Promised "5 minutes" before attention she waited for 20 minutes before ringing again, only to be impatiently told that she must not ring the bell so often. To an elderly person trying to preserve their dignity that was cruel. My mother also is absolutely 100% aware of what drugs she should be taking. The previous hospital, who had transferred her to The Richardson, had made clerical errors on the list of drugs (I have already commented to them directly regarding that carelessness). Mum pointed this out, but no-one offered to go and check whether she was correct, which resulted pills she didn't need being forced on her - which, in fact, she refused to take. A consultation with her GP on discharge has confirmed that she was, indeed, correct.
As I said, most staff were kind, but some really need to pull their socks up, listen to the patients, investigate their needs, and treat them with a little more dignity and patience.
