What I liked
Shocking standards
What could be improved
As a patient i witnessed shocking lack of care for elderly patients on my ward. They were left in wet beds, alarms ignored and shouted at until they cried and when i interviened i was told to mind my own business and the curtain closed.
Tablets were not controlled and left on tables for patients to take on their own despite elderly wandering patients who could take other peoples medicine.
Wristbands not issued so staff do not know who the patient is or what medicine they can have.
No oral care for four days and no accurate recording of toilet needs for patients making them incontinent, calls for be pans ignored consistently.
Staff asleep in the day room on night duty, when asked to turn off alarms after an hour staff said you should appreciate what we do, we are short staffed!
When i said i had been waiting for pain control for two hours i was told to go back to bed and wait. The same member of staff then went off duty without providing pain relief so i took non perscribed medicine as i had no other option.
Staff had to ask me what tablets i had taken as they had not recorded what i was taking.
Complained to matron who said this problem was ongoing for the last 15 months, when i said i was worried about staff reaction to my concerns was told staff were professional and it would not affect my care. After this staff did not speak to me and ignored me the consultant also told me to stop being antagonistic and aggressive to staff as they had complained about my challenging the care being given.
The stress of all this, and remember i went in as an ill patient has contributed to my considerable anxiety over the last week.
Anything else?
The lack of dignity and care for the elderly is a scandal at this hospital that must be addressed urgently. I was fobbed off when complaining so that an official complaint would not be made. Basic care is not being given, incompetence at all levels is to blame and a complete lack of management cannot be allowed to continue, this is after all a hospital.
"Shocking scary frightening"
