"Poor patient care due to lack of equipment and supplies"

About: Royal Gwent Hospital / Maternity care

(as a relative),

My daughter was taken in to the Royal Gwent Hospital in labour in late February 2012 and in a delivery room they attempted to take her blood pressure but the machine would not work so the nurse had to go and find a manual kit to take her blood pressure.

When my daughter's contractions were almost continuous and she was in great pain, the gas and air (Entonox) ran out. The Midwife couldn't find a replacement cylinder so she called a porter to fetch one. She was told by the porter that he couldn't deliver one for at least an hour!

The Midwife then had my daughter placed into a wheelchair and rushed to another part of the hospital where they had entonox on tap and didn't rely on cylinders.

The behaviour and care taken by the staff was exemplary but they were let down severely by the equipment they had to work with.

We would like to thank the midwife and nurses for the excellent care they provided in very difficult conditions. However my daughter did have to wait an additional 6 hours to be released as there was nobody to complete her paperwork.
