About: St Mary's Hospital (Newport)

What could be improved

My grandfather was admitted with prostate cancer in November and his cancer spread to his liver. His health has been going downhill ever since and was hallucinating because of the medication he was administered. The hospital discharged him and sent him to a care home saying he didn't need nursing care when he did. He has been allowed to come home but has only come home to be with his family, not because he's healthy. He has bed sores and has not been given an inflatable seating device and has only just been given an appointment with his consultants assistant and not the actual consultant after about 2 weeks. I am not happy with how he has been treated and I am aware there are other patients but if they treat all their patients like this they must have numerous complaints. It is a difficult time for the patient and the family when the patient has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and the hospital don't seem to try to make things as comfortable for the patient as possible.

Anything else?

It breaks my heart watching my grandfather be uncomfortable so close to his death. I'm only 14 and this is already a haunting experience and now I feel the NHS has failed him and many other patients they have.

The trust is sorry to read of the care that your grandfather received during his inpatient stay and subsequent discharge. It is always distressing to hear that someone has had a poor experience of our services, and I would ask that should you feel able, that you or a family member contact the Quality Team to discuss this further. Meanwhile thank you for taking the time to provide us with the valuable feedback that is used to improve patient care.
