"Emergency surgery followed by lack of information"

My son recently received emergency surgery and was based on ward 12. Our grateful thanks to the operating team and the ward staff for their care.

Establishing a successful feeding regime would one would think be of prime importance. The choices of food given to him did not reflect his current need for a light, easily digested food. He was offered tomato soup, beef and onions, salads and curry when he needed scrambled eggs poached or steamed fish or white meat.

One evening he ate his main course and left his desert for later. The maid came and removed his desert from his table without asking him if he wanted it. We asked the maid not to remove it and she just took it and put it in the bin with no no apology and was just concerned that the dish was cleared away before 6.15. Had no-one told her that every calorie counted for my son after his surgery or that patients dignity should come first?

My son was discharged having a diagnosis of IBD, no dietary advice, no appointment to see his consultant or the specialist nurse and no expectations of time scales. On telephoning the following week for his appointments he was told they could not give him an appointment as everyone was on half-term holiday. He could easily be a patient who could be readmitted as he is lacking basic information that is surely readily available.
