"Very shocked at poor communication and medical..."

About: Southampton General Hospital

What I liked

I was referred to outhampton regional immunology service when I moved to IOW. Initial contact with specialist immunology nurse was excellent. She was enthusiastic and returned calls.

What could be improved

Waited several months to see recommended specialist immunologist which I expected because of routine nature of support needed. On arrival I was not told that I would be seeing another consultant instead. I only found out when I was called in to consulting room. The consultant was difficult to communicate with and wished to change my treatment without seriously consulting me and discharge me from his department leaving me to rely on IOW respiratory consultants, when I have immunological issues also related to neurology, medication , gastroenterology, skin, lymphendopathy and repeat infections of different parts of body. I asked him to provide written advice about to local GPs and consultants on IOW about correct antibiotic usage and testing for infections.

Consultant eventualy wrote letter to GP but did not include me and two months later I discovered that consultant had written letter suggesting I had two diagnosed illnesses that I did not have and that I had had adverse reactions to six antibiotics which by implication should not be used in future. [I have had no reactions to any of these drugs and need to use them regularly for infections. Preventing me using them would be very dangerous] The letter contained no information about changing my treatment nor the reason for suggesting doing so, nor requested correct medication usage or infection testing.

I have repeatedly tried to get patient services to resolve this problem amicably without success. The consultant has not contacted me but apparently written without my consent to my GP "clarifying his previous letter".

I would not recommend this consultant to anyone because the contents of his letter if used by an ordinary doctor such as my GP could put me at serious risk of lifethreatening medical complications.
