"thanful for good care"

About: The Whittington Hospital

What I liked

I am pregnant and needed admission to murray ward on 4th floor, having first been seen at maternity triage.

In February 2012 I was admitted for a second time this year. I had extremely good care. The doctors explained so much more of possible reasons for the pain and did the tests [the staff involved in scanning and blood tests were very polite and professional]. The midwifes on the ward provided extremely good care. After the second discharge I feel I have received the best possible care for myself and the unborn baby.

I would suggest to trust the midwifes in charge any worries and concerns you might have, as they are very knowledgeable and experienced and genuinely able to help by communicating with the doctors and other wards/services in the hospital.

What could be improved

My first admission, in January 2012 - I was not satisfied with. The doctor who discharged me on Saturday 28th Jan did so against my will [but they wrote in the book that I gave consent] in the middle of an antibiotic therapy and where I was unable to take care of myself and was in bed most of the time because of the pain. They let me go home without anti blood clot injections which [as turned out later] I did need as I spent most of the time in my bed after discharge. I guess it is about the pressure on the doctors to get patients discharged.

So what needs to be improved is consistency in doctors committment to listen to the patient. Also this doctor who discharged me was the only one that had chaperone with them - I strongly prefer to have a one-to-one conversation.

Anything else?

I would suggest to trust the midwifes in charge any worries and concerns you might have, as they are very knowledgeable and experienced and genuinely able to help by communicating with the doctors and other wards/services in the hospital.

Thank you very much for your feedback. We are glad to hear that you experienced excellent care from the nurses and doctors during your second admission. We are, however sorry to hear about your experience with one of the doctors during your first admission. Your comments will be fed back to the maternity department for their learning. If you would like to talk to someone specifically about your concerns please contact the PALS and Complaints Team at the hospital on 020 7288 5551 or at whh-tr.whitthealthpals@nhs.net.
