"Would not choose this hospital again or recommend..."

About: University Hospital (Coventry)

What I liked

This is on behaalf of my partner, his first experience at Coventry hospital was positive, he had an op on a hernia and all went well with good follow up care.

What could be improved

However, today, 15th Feb 2012, my partner arrived at hospital for a major spinal operation which we would assume would bring alot of relief as he has been in chronic pain for almost a year. The problems began the night before, when calling to confirm his attendance today, after several promises that he would be called back, we eventually found out his notes had been lost, despite his attendence at a pre op appointment just one day before. In any case we were told to come in at 7.30am. So he began fasting at bedtime, only having water with pain relief at 6am. After collecting a new set of records at the main reception we headed up to Ward 43, and my partners father and I were assured the op would take place at around 11-12 am. So we headed home. 12noon came and went, as did 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm, all this time with no water or pain relief, I feel extremely cross and let down at the hospital. staff have been rude and unpleasant towards my partner, and very unsympathetic. Finally my partner is now on his way home, with no operation having taken place as yet and in a great deal of pain! I understand that emergencies often happen in neurosurgery, but I do not believe it to be necessary to deprive someone of water for so long and to leave them in such pain. when it became clear there would be a long wait, water and pain relief should have been offered!! My partner has been advised to complain to the hospital about his treatment today and I will fully support him in this!
